Steve Smith Appointed As Interim Captain For Sri Lanka Test Series

January 9, 2025: Steve Smith has been appointed as the interim captain of the Australian cricket team for their upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, which will begin on January 29, 2025. This decision comes as Pat Cummins is unavailable due to both paternity leave and an ankle issue sustained during the recent home summer. Smith’s leadership will be crucial as Australia looks to navigate the challenges of touring Sri Lanka, a nation known for its difficult subcontinent conditions.

The squad announcement includes some exciting fresh faces, as former Australia U19 Cricket World Cup captain Cooper Connolly earns his first call-up to the Test squad. Alongside him, Nathan McSweeney makes a return after missing out on the recent Border-Gavaskar Series. The squad also includes spinners Matt Kuhnemann and Todd Murphy, both of whom will be important in Sri Lanka’s spin-friendly conditions.

However, the team will be without key players like Josh Hazlewood, who is sidelined due to a calf injury, and Mitchell Marsh, who is focusing on preparations for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. Some players who were considered for selection, such as Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa, and Peter Handscomb, were ultimately left out of the squad.

George Bailey, Australia’s chair of selectors, spoke about the opportunity this tour provides for newer faces to step up. He emphasized that the Sri Lanka tour, with its unique challenges, offers a valuable learning experience for young players, especially with upcoming important tours in the subcontinent in the future. The squad will have to be adaptable to varying pitch conditions, which may require a flexible approach to the lineup depending on the surface.

The two-Test series will be part of the ongoing World Test Championship 2023-2025 cycle, although both Australia and South Africa have already secured their spots in the top two positions, meaning this series won’t have any bearing on the WTC standings. Australia is looking ahead to their upcoming clash with South Africa in June 2025 at Lord’s, where they will defend the WTC mace.

Sri Lanka Test Series Schedule:

  • January 29 to February 2: Galle
  • February 6 to February 10: Galle

Australia Squad:
