“There Was a Threat”: Rohit Sharma Recalls Intense India-Pakistan T20 World Cup Build-Up

India captain Rohit Sharma opens up about the tense atmosphere, security lockdown, and unforgettable emotions ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 clash with Pakistan.

New Delhi | June 28, 2025 — India’s T20 World Cup 2024-winning captain Rohit Sharma has opened up about one of the tournament’s most high-stakes matches — the clash against arch-rivals Pakistan. In a candid conversation on JioHotstar, the veteran cricketer revealed that the Indian team was placed under tight security and confined to their hotel rooms ahead of the blockbuster match due to a threat alert.

“We were told there was a threat before the India-Pakistan match. For two days, we weren’t allowed to leave the hotel. The atmosphere started building from there,” Rohit said.

Despite captains often calling India-Pakistan games “just another match,” Rohit admitted that such encounters carry a unique emotional weight.

“The hotel was packed—fans, media, everyone. You could feel something big was about to happen. And when we got near the stadium, it felt like a celebration. That’s the magic of an India-Pakistan game,” he added.

In that gripping encounter, Rishabh Pant stood tall with a gritty 42 off 31 balls, helping India post 119 in 19 overs on a difficult surface.

“We just told Rishabh to be himself — unsettle the bowlers and play freely. On that pitch, his 42 was like a 70-run knock,” Rohit said.

Jasprit Bumrah was once again India’s match-winner with the ball, delivering under pressure and finishing with three key wickets to script a nail-biting 6-run win.

“With Bumrah, it’s about timing. He’s a strike bowler who doesn’t leak runs. You have to use him smartly, especially when the chase is tight,” the captain explained.

Rohit also lauded Arshdeep Singh, calling him India’s most improved T20 bowler in recent years.

“There’s a reason Arshdeep is now India’s highest T20I wicket-taker in the last two years. He’s incredibly smart with how he bowls.”

Now retired from ODIs and T20Is, Rohit Sharma seems to be enjoying a rare chance to reflect. And judging by this behind-the-scenes peek, the India-Pakistan rivalry still lights the fiercest fire in his cricketing heart.
