“Till the Time…”: Gambhir Speaks on Rohit, Virat’s 2027 World Cup Prospects

Head coach Gautam Gambhir distances himself from selection duties, says performance alone will decide Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s future in Indian cricket, not farewells or age.

New Delhi, May 8, 2025 — Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir on Tuesday weighed in on the future of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, stating that their participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup will depend solely on their performance and not age or sentiment.

Speaking at ABP News’ ‘India At 2047’ Summit, Gambhir emphasized that selection decisions rest with the selectors, not the coach. “A coach’s job isn’t to select the team. It’s the job of selectors. My role is to pick the playing XI from the selected squad,” he clarified.

Both Rohit, 38, and Kohli, 36, remain pivotal to India’s white-ball setup, though Rohit has recently announced his retirement from Test cricket. Questions have lingered about their long-term future, especially in light of India’s Test transition and growing competition.

“Till the time they are performing, they should absolutely be part of the team,” Gambhir said. “When to start and when to stop is an individual call. If you’re fit and performing, why not play till 45?”

Gambhir refrained from commenting on their possible inclusion in the upcoming England Test tour beginning June 20, reiterating that it’s a decision for the selectors. However, he praised both for their showing in the recently concluded Champions Trophy. “The world saw their performance in the CT. That’s the answer.”

Asked about the concept of farewells, Gambhir rejected the notion of ceremonial exits, saying the real tribute lies in fans’ admiration. “No cricketer plays for a farewell. The true reward is how the country remembers them, not a send-off match. Love from the nation is the biggest trophy.”

With Indian cricket at a transitional crossroads, Gambhir’s firm stance reflects a performance-first culture, devoid of legacy sentimentality.
