“We Can’t Change Wicket…”: Daryl Mitchell Ahead Of Pune Test Against India

October 23, 2024: New Zealand’s preparation for the second Test against India in Pune is focusing more on adaptability rather than concerns about the pitch, according to Daryl Mitchell. Despite the hosts preparing a bald, low-bounce black-soil pitch designed to counter New Zealand’s seamers—particularly after New Zealand’s historic Test win in Bengaluru—Mitchell emphasized the team’s focus on reacting and adjusting to whatever conditions they face.

Mitchell noted, “We can’t change the surface… we’ll come up with a plan and find a way to take 20 wickets and hopefully score a few runs as well.”

Mitchell, known for his aggressive play against spin, has faced a recent dip in form, managing just 406 runs in nine innings at an average of 27.06, significantly below his career average. Nonetheless, he remains confident, highlighting the natural ups and downs of Test cricket and his love for playing for New Zealand.

With Kane Williamson still sidelined due to a groin strain, Will Young will continue to bat at No. 3. Young recently impressed in partnership with Rachin Ravindra, helping New Zealand chase down a modest target of 107 in the first Test. Mitchell praised both Young and Ravindra for smoothly fitting into their roles within the team.

A key figure in New Zealand’s bowling attack is Will O’Rourke, who made an impact by taking seven wickets, including dismissing Virat Kohli in the first innings. The tall seamer, standing at 6’4″, uses his height and ability to move the ball both ways to trouble batsmen. Mitchell, who has faced O’Rourke in domestic cricket, commended him as a “great talent” and tough bowler to face, especially on bouncy surfaces like Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

New Zealand’s approach, led by players like Mitchell and O’Rourke, will revolve around resilience and adaptability as they aim to overcome the conditions India has prepared in Pune.
