Why is Yuvraj Singh Being Hailed as the Brain Behind Shubman Gill’s Captaincy?

Yuvraj’s mentorship and Gill’s father’s support credited for shaping India’s new Test skipper, as Gill gears up for the England series.

May 25, 2025: Legendary Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh is being widely credited for mentoring Shubman Gill as the young star steps up to lead India’s Test team for the upcoming series against England.

Speaking to ANI, former India cricketer Yograj Singh, father of Yuvraj, highlighted the role of family and mentorship in Gill’s development.

“The credit for Shubman Gill’s performance goes to his father and Yuvraj Singh,” he said, adding, “If Shubman Gill has become the captain today and will stay for a long time, Yuvraj Singh’s guidance will play and has played an essential role in that.”

Calling Yuvraj the “greatest cricketing brain in the world,” Yograj praised his son’s ability to nurture talent and shape Gill’s cricketing acumen.

“Someone like Yuvraj Singh taking Gill under his wing is a big thing,” Yograj stated.

Gill, just 25 years old, is among the youngest to be handed India’s Test captaincy in recent years. Despite lacking experience as a red-ball captain, he’s led India in T20Is and captained the Gujarat Titans in the IPL.

Gill’s rise to captaincy comes on the heels of India’s successful Champions Trophy campaign earlier this year, where he served as vice-captain. In Tests, he’s already scored 1,893 runs in 32 matches, including five centuries.
