Will Australia Reshuffle Their Top Order After WTC Final Loss?

June 15, 2025: After Australia’s defeat in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa at Lord’s, head coach Andrew McDonald has hinted at possible changes in the top order. Marnus Labuschagne, promoted up the order in the final, failed to make an impact with scores of 17 and 22. With an underwhelming WTC cycle average of 27.82, his spot in the team has come under scrutiny ahead of the West Indies tour beginning June 25.

Will Australia Reshuffle Their Top Order After WTC Final Loss?

Youngster Sam Konstas, who impressed during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is being considered as a potential opener. Labuschagne might hold onto his place if Steve Smith is unable to recover from a finger injury sustained during the WTC final. “It might be the time,” McDonald admitted, referring to the need for a more stable opening combination, after a period of “musical chairs” at the top.

Usman Khawaja, another key name in the spotlight, struggled in both innings at Lord’s, falling to Kagiso Rabada twice. Despite a recent high score of 232 against Sri Lanka, his issues against fast bowling from around the wicket resurfaced. Still, McDonald defended Khawaja, drawing parallels with David Warner’s prolonged career and backing the veteran to bounce back.

McDonald emphasized that Khawaja remains a crucial part of the team’s future. “He’s on contract, he’s an important player… I think he’s got plenty of runs left in him,” said the coach, praising Khawaja’s fitness, preparation, and recent form in domestic cricket. With the Ashes looming, Australia’s opening lineup may be up for a shake-up, but Khawaja’s place appears secure — for now.
