Will Virat Kohli Play County Cricket? Deets Inside

Middlesex open to talks with Kohli post-Test retirement; deal may involve MCC collaboration

May 18, 2025 | Virat Kohli may have stepped away from Test cricket, but the cricket world is far from done with him. The Indian stalwart has now received a significant invitation from Middlesex County Cricket Club, opening the door for a potential County Championship debut in England.

“Virat Kohli is the most iconic player of his generation, so of course we are interested in having that conversation,” said Alan Coleman, Director of Cricket at Middlesex, in a quote to The Guardian.

Kohli, who retired from Test cricket in May 2025, left behind a formidable legacy with 9,230 runs in 123 Tests and 40 wins as India’s most successful Test captain. His absence from the red-ball format now leaves him active only in ODIs and the IPL, where he plays for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

While Kohli was earlier set to play for Surrey in 2018 ahead of India’s tour of England, a neck injury ruled him out. A county stint has eluded him since, but that might change now.

Interestingly, players like AB de Villiers and Kane Williamson have previously played in England’s domestic competitions, facilitated via collaborations with the MCC. A similar structure could be explored to bring Kohli into the County fold.

At 36, Kohli remains one of cricket’s most influential figures. While he now eyes an elusive IPL title with RCB, his presence in County cricket would add unmatched star power and experience to the English summer.
