On Day 3 of the second Test against England, Yashasvi Jaiswal blazed his way into the record books, matching legends Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag by reaching 2,000 Test runs in just 40 innings.

On 4th July 2025 at Edgbaston, Yashasvi Jaiswal etched his name into Indian cricket history as he became the joint-fastest Indian to score 2,000 Test runs, matching the legendary milestones of Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag. The young opener achieved the feat in his 40th Test innings during India’s second innings against England on Day 3 of the ongoing second Test, reaffirming his position as one of the brightest stars in Indian cricket’s new era.

Coming in with an aggressive mindset during the final session, Jaiswal wasted no time asserting dominance over the English bowling attack. He reached the 2,000-run landmark in style, sending a thick edge wide of the gully for a boundary — his sixth of the short but impactful innings.

The 23-year-old left-hander joined elite company by reaching the milestone in just 40 innings, equalling the pace of Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, and going past icons such as Vijay Hazare, Gautam Gambhir, Sunil Gavaskar, and even the great Sachin Tendulkar. Only Tendulkar himself achieved the milestone at a younger age — 20 years and 330 days — compared to Jaiswal’s 23 years and 188 days.

Jaiswal’s innings, though brief, was electric. He slashed and drove with confidence, dismantling the English field placements before being trapped LBW by pacer Josh Tongue for 28 off 22 balls. In a controversial moment, Jaiswal opted for a review after being given out. England captain Ben Stokes challenged the timeliness of the appeal, rushing in to signal the DRS timer had expired. However, the on-field umpire accepted the review after a long conversation.

The review upheld the original decision, lighting up all three reds on the ball-tracker, sending Jaiswal back after a rapid cameo that gave India a flying start to their second innings. This came after a frustrating first innings for the youngster, where he fell 13 runs short of a well-deserved century, again undone by Stokes after a fine 87 off 107 balls.

Interestingly, Jaiswal’s recent struggles in England have all come against right-arm seamers — a contrast to his usual dominance. All four of his dismissals in the series so far have come at the hands of right-arm bowlers, giving him an average of just 30.25 in the series, despite multiple starts.

With Jaiswal gone, KL Rahul took over the mantle of aggression, timing his strokes effortlessly and keeping the scoreboard ticking. Karun Nair provided steady support at the other end. India ended Day 3 on 64/1 in 13 overs, carrying a commanding overall lead of 244 runs and setting the stage for a dominant Day 4.

Brief Summary:
