June 29, 2025: Rohit Sharma recently opened up about one of the most intense moments from the T20 World Cup 2024 final — the heart-stopping review of Suryakumar Yadav’s catch that ultimately sealed India’s long-awaited victory over South Africa.

India’s title hopes were hanging by a thread during the final over. With 16 runs needed and David Miller on strike, Hardik Pandya delivered a wide full toss. Miller launched it down the ground — and then came the turning point.

Suryakumar Yadav sprinted from long-off, timed his jump perfectly, and — in a gravity-defying effort — completed the catch by tossing the ball in the air as he crossed the boundary, only to step back inside and finish the catch cleanly.

Speaking on JioHotstar, Rohit revealed he was convinced the ball had cleared the rope. “From where I was at long-on, it looked like a six. My heart sank,” he admitted. “I even told Surya while the third umpire was reviewing, ‘You tell me if it’s a catch — I don’t have it in me to watch the screen.’”

What made it more nerve-racking was Suryakumar himself being unsure at one point. “He told me he caught it, but then I saw him whisper to someone, ‘Maybe, I don’t know,’” Rohit said with a laugh.

The third umpire’s verdict, after several tense moments, confirmed the catch — a turning point that led to India’s thrilling 7-run win and ended their 17-year T20 World Cup title drought.
