Sanjay Patil urges Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube to lead Mumbai’s redemption in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals after a disappointing loss to J&K.
February 5, 2025: Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy campaign in the ongoing season has been highlighted by the inclusion of several Indian cricket stars. However, a disappointing loss to Jammu & Kashmir in the league stage has raised questions about the performance of India’s top players in domestic cricket. The upcoming quarterfinal match against Haryana at the Chaudhary Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium in Lahli, starting February 8, offers a chance at redemption.

Mumbai’s chief selector, Sanjay Patil, has delivered a stern message to Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube, who are set to bolster the team. The presence of Indian T20 captain Suryakumar and all-rounder Dube is expected to strengthen Mumbai’s lineup, but Patil has emphasized the need for them to contribute significantly.

“After our defeat against J&K, despite having six India players in the squad, it’s clear that being available is not enough. Players need to perform and uphold Mumbai’s cricketing culture of giving 100%,” said Patil in a statement to TOI.
The selector also highlighted the tough decision to exclude young talent, such as opener Ayush Mhatre, to accommodate senior players. “It’s disappointing to see that we couldn’t capitalize on the presence of top players. This time, I expect Suryakumar and Dube to not just participate but perform and help Mumbai secure a victory,” he added.
The Mumbai squad for the quarterfinal is led by Ajinkya Rahane and features a mix of experienced campaigners and promising youngsters. With pressure mounting on the senior players, all eyes will be on Suryakumar and Dube to deliver.
