December 12, 2024: D Gukesh Makes History as Youngest Chess World Champion

Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh has etched his name in history books by becoming the youngest-ever chess world champion. With the match poised for another draw, Ding Liren made a critical error by moving his rook adjacent to his king, effectively sealing his fate. Gukesh capitalized on the mistake, clinching victory in a dramatic finale. Had the game ended in a draw, the championship would have been decided through tie-breaks scheduled for the following day.

Breaking a Legendary Record

By securing this victory, Gukesh—at just 18 years, 8 months, and 14 days old—has become the youngest chess world champion in history. He shattered the long-standing record held by legendary chess player Garry Kasparov, who won the title at 22 years, 6 months, and 27 days.

Gukesh’s triumph also marks a historic milestone for Indian chess, as he becomes only the second player from India to win the world championship. He follows in the footsteps of Viswanathan Anand, who claimed the title four times and is widely regarded as a pioneer of the game in the country.

A Momentous Achievement for Indian Chess

Gukesh’s victory is being celebrated as a defining moment for Indian chess, solidifying the nation’s growing dominance on the global stage. The young champion’s composure, tactical brilliance, and ability to capitalize on opportunities have drawn admiration from chess enthusiasts and experts worldwide.

This win not only elevates Gukesh’s standing in the chess world but also inspires a new generation of Indian players to aim for greatness. With this victory, Gukesh has proven that age is no barrier to achieving historic feats in the world of chess.
