D Gukesh Breaks Down in Tears After Becoming Youngest-Ever World Chess Champion-Watch

December 13, 2024: Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh scripted history on Thursday by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion. The 18-year-old defeated defending champion Ding Liren of China in the decisive Game 14 of the 2024 World Chess Championship held in Singapore.

The match was poised for a tie-break decider on Friday until Ding’s critical blunder — moving his rook adjacent to his king — handed Gukesh the opportunity to seal the game. Gukesh capitalised on the mistake with precision, securing the title and ending the reign of the Chinese champion.

At just 18 years, 8 months, and 14 days, Gukesh shattered the long-standing record of Garry Kasparov, who was 22 years and 6 months old when he became World Champion in 1985. Gukesh is also only the second Indian to claim the world chess crown, following the legendary Viswanathan Anand, a four-time world champion.

In an emotional moment that has since gone viral, Gukesh was seen breaking down in tears as he shook hands with Ding Liren, realizing the magnitude of his achievement. The video has garnered widespread admiration on social media, with fans praising the young Grandmaster’s resilience and determination.
