Daryl Mitchell Becomes Fastest New Zealand Batter To Reach 2000 ODI Runs In ODIs

April 5, 2025: Daryl Mitchell etched his name into the history books on Saturday, becoming the fastest New Zealand batsman to reach the significant milestone of 2000 One Day International (ODI) runs. This remarkable achievement came during the third ODI against Pakistan, where Mitchell scored 43 runs, taking his career tally to 2041 runs in just 47 innings.

The milestone was made even more impressive as Mitchell surpassed the previous record held by Andrew Jones, who reached 2000 ODI runs in 52 innings. Mitchell’s feat was widely celebrated, with the Blackcaps official social media account tweeting the achievement: “Daryl Mitchell becomes the fastest New Zealand men’s player to reach 2,000 ODI runs. Mitchell reaches the milestone in 47 innings, eclipsing Andrew Jones’ record of 52 innings.”

Mitchell, who was called up to New Zealand’s Test squad in late 2019 as a replacement for the injured Colin de Grandhomme, made an immediate impact in international cricket. He impressed in his debut innings against England, scoring a composed 73 runs. Since then, Mitchell has cemented his place in New Zealand’s limited-overs lineup, known for his steady batting performances and versatility.

With an average of 48.59 in ODIs, Mitchell’s consistent performances have made him one of the most dependable players for New Zealand. His impressive 2041 runs in 47 innings showcase his ability to play in diverse conditions and against challenging opponents.

In the third ODI against Pakistan, which was affected by rain and reduced to 42 overs per side, New Zealand set a target of 264/8. Pakistan, trailing 2-0 in the ongoing series, was unable to recover, with New Zealand securing the series win with a dominant 84-run victory in the second ODI.

Daryl Mitchell’s achievement further solidifies his reputation as one of New Zealand’s rising stars in world cricket. As the Blackcaps lead the series 2-0, Mitchell’s contribution to the team’s success is a testament to his growing impact on the international stage.
