March 15, 2025: Ahead of the Women’s Premier League 2025 final between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians, left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen expressed her desire for the team to win the trophy for their captain, Meg Lanning. This would be a significant achievement for Lanning, as it is the only major title that has eluded her in her illustrious cricket career.
Lanning, who has led the Delhi Capitals side to the final twice in the past, is yet to win the WPL title, despite coming close in the last two seasons. Jonassen, speaking ahead of the final, revealed that the team’s motivation is to secure the trophy not just for themselves but specifically for their captain. “We’ve been so close the last two seasons and obviously for me, as well, being able to play a lot of cricket alongside Meg, as well as her captaining us, it’s almost like the only trophy she hasn’t had. So you almost want to get it for people like her,” Jonassen said in a video shared by Delhi Capitals on social media.

The Australian left-arm spinner has been in excellent form during WPL 2025, taking 11 wickets in seven innings with an impressive average of 19. Her best figures so far are 4/31. She added that winning the WPL title would not only be a major achievement for the team but also a relief, as they’ve been knocked out in crucial moments in the previous seasons.
On the other hand, Meg Lanning, who has been a consistent performer for Delhi Capitals, is currently the fourth-highest run-scorer in WPL 2025. Lanning has scored 263 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 117.93, with three half-centuries, including a best score of 92.

Delhi Capitals finished on top of the WPL 2025 league stage with 10 points, having won five out of eight matches. They will go into the final on the back of a narrow defeat against Gujarat Giants in their final league match. Mumbai Indians, who finished second in the standings due to a superior net run rate, entered the final after defeating Gujarat Giants by 47 runs in the eliminator.
This season, Delhi Capitals have managed to defeat Mumbai Indians in both of their league-stage meetings. The two teams have met seven times in the WPL so far, with Delhi leading the head-to-head 4-3. As the final approaches, both teams will be eager to secure the title, with Delhi looking to finally win the elusive WPL trophy for their captain and team.
