With the IPL likely to resume on May 16, the Rs 11.75 crore pacer’s absence could significantly impact DC’s bowling attack; more Aussie stars also uncertain.
New Delhi | May 12, 2025:
Delhi Capitals (DC) could be in for a major blow as their marquee pacer Mitchell Starc, who was bought for a massive ₹11.75 crore at the IPL 2025 auction, is unlikely to return for the remainder of the tournament if it resumes as planned. The Indian Premier League was suspended last week due to escalating India-Pakistan tensions, and a tentative restart date has now been set for May 16, with the final possibly pushed to May 30.

Starc returned to Sydney shortly after the league’s suspension, accompanied by his wife, Australian cricketer Alyssa Healy. While he declined to speak to the media upon arrival, his manager later told Nine News that the fast bowler “might not return to India” for the remaining fixtures.

According to The Age, Cricket Australia (CA) is expected to support players who opt out of returning, citing safety and logistical complexities as reasons.
More Aussies May Pull Out
Starc isn’t alone in his potential withdrawal. Pat Cummins and Travis Head, both representing Sunrisers Hyderabad—already out of playoff contention—may also skip the remainder of the IPL to focus on preparations for the World Test Championship final at Lord’s starting June 11.

Bringing back foreign players could also prove difficult. Most overseas cricketers departed within 24 hours of the suspension. While New Zealand’s players are already home, Cricket South Africa has yet to finalize an extension beyond its May 25 NOC deadline. CSA is reportedly reviewing the matter with player safety a top priority.
Mixed Impact on Other Franchises
Meanwhile, the sudden pause may prove a blessing in disguise for RCB, whose captain Rajat Patidar is nursing a finger injury. Originally set to miss two matches, the break offers him a chance to recover in time for a potential playoff berth or the upcoming India A tour of England.
