T20 legend Chris Gayle has revealed the emotional turmoil he faced during his final IPL season, claiming the Punjab Kings management “disrespected” him and left him on the verge of depression. The star stated that he had an emotional conversation with then-coach Anil Kumble before deciding to leave.

September 8, 2025: In a candid and explosive interview, T20 legend Chris Gayle has revealed the true reason for his abrupt departure from the Punjab Kings in 2021, stating that he felt “disrespected” and was on the verge of “slipping into depression.” The “Universe Boss” alleged he was not treated with the dignity a senior player deserved and was instead treated “like a kid.”

Speaking on a podcast, Gayle recounted the emotional toll of playing in the bio-bubble and said his mental health was more important than money. He revealed that he had a one-on-one discussion with then-coach Anil Kumble, where he “literally broke down” and decided to leave the team. “I was really hurt. I was disappointed with Anil and how the entire thing was actually run,” Gayle said, adding that even then-captain KL Rahul tried to convince him to stay.

While the Punjab Kings’ official press release at the time cited “bubble fatigue” as the reason for his departure, Gayle’s new statements paint a very different picture. The franchise has yet to issue a public response to these specific allegations.

Despite his grievances, Gayle said he is available to make a comeback to the league if a team wants him. However, he warned that he holds “grudges” because, for him, “loyalty means a lot.”
