June 19, 2025: Indian chess grandmaster Divya Deshmukh delivered a stunning performance at the World Team Blitz Championships in London, defeating World No. 1 Hou Yifan in the second leg of the Blitz semifinal. The victory has sparked nationwide celebration, with top leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami hailing her achievement.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), CM Dhami wrote, “Hearty congratulations to Divya Deshmukh ji on defeating world number 1 player Hou Yifan in the semi-finals of the World Team Blitz Championship held in London. Your remarkable achievement is an inspiration for chess players across the country.” He added that her continued success will keep making India proud.

Prime Minister Modi also posted his congratulations, writing, “Congratulations to Divya Deshmukh on defeating the World No. 1, Hou Yifan… Her success highlights her grit and determination. It also inspires many upcoming chess players.” Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya joined in, calling her victory a “Checkmate!” moment and wishing her continued success in future matches.

India’s presence on the international chess stage has been impressive in recent months. D. Gukesh, the reigning World Champion, claimed third place at the Norway Chess Tournament, including a memorable win over Magnus Carlsen. Arjun Erigaisi also secured a fifth-place finish, while Aravindh Chithambaram and R Praggnanandhaa claimed the top two spots at the Stepan Avagyan Memorial Chess Tournament held from May 28 to June 6. Indian chess continues to shine with young stars leading the charge.
