July 10, 2025: In the wake of India’s cancelled tour of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has formally approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with a proposal to host a six-match white-ball series in August 2025. The proposed series includes three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20 Internationals (T20Is).
Significantly, the series could mark the comeback of Indian veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to international cricket, adding further intrigue and fanfare to the proposal.
BCCI Yet to Confirm
The BCCI is currently reviewing the proposal, with its final decision expected to hinge on the scheduling of the Asia Cup, which is also due in the same window. The proposed fixtures mirror the six-match structure that was originally planned for the cancelled Bangladesh tour.
“We’ve received a request from Sri Lanka Cricket to play three ODIs and three T20Is in August. The idea is being considered, but a final decision will only be made once the Asia Cup dates are finalized,” a BCCI official familiar with the matter told reporters.
Opportunity Amid Disruption
India’s planned tour of Bangladesh in August was recently called off due to administrative and logistical challenges. The unexpected gap has presented SLC with a chance to host the Men in Blue, which could provide a financial and sporting boost to Sri Lankan cricket.
Kohli-Rohit Comeback on the Cards

If approved, the series could see the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, both of whom have been on an extended break from international duty post the 2024 T20 World Cup. Their participation, however, would depend on the team selection and fitness clearance.
