Fans Puzzled as Ben Stokes Abruptly Quits Alcohol: What’s Going On?

In a move driven by discipline and determination, England Test captain Ben Stokes has revealed that he has quit drinking alcohol as part of his ongoing hamstring rehabilitation, aiming to return at full strength ahead of the highly anticipated Ashes series against Australia.

The 33-year-old all-rounder opened up about his decision on the Untapped podcast, sharing that he has not had a drink since January 2, 2025. Stokes believes that cutting out alcohol could aid in a quicker and more complete recovery from the hamstring injury he sustained late last year.

“After my first major injury, I remember the shock of it… and after the initial adrenaline had stopped, I was thinking, ‘How has this happened?’” Stokes said. “We did have a bit of a drink four or five nights ago — could that have played a part? It wouldn’t have helped.”

He continued, “Then I was like, ‘OK, I need to start changing what I do.’ I don’t think I’ll ever be completely sober, but I’ve not had a drink since January 2. I said to myself: ‘Not until I finish my injury rehab and get back on the field.’”

Injury Timeline and Comeback

Stokes underwent hamstring surgery in December 2024, following a tear he sustained during the third Test against New Zealand. The injury, which first flared up during The Hundred tournament last year, forced him out of action for several months, derailing England’s plans and casting doubts over his availability for future fixtures.

Now, after months of rehab and lifestyle changes, Stokes is set to make his return in England’s one-off Test match against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge on Thursday — a crucial step in proving his fitness ahead of the Ashes.

Off the Field: New Venture with CleanCo

Stokes also recently announced a new partnership with CleanCo, a zero-alcohol spirits brand. He has joined the company as both an investor and brand partner, aligning his personal choices with a broader message of mindful living.

“This felt like a natural fit given where I am in my own journey,” Stokes said about the partnership.

Focused on the Ashes

With the Ashes on the horizon, Stokes’ renewed commitment to health and fitness comes at a crucial time for England cricket. His presence will be vital as England aims to reclaim the urn from their fierce rivals Australia, in one of the sport’s most celebrated rivalries.
