FC Barcelona Faces Internal Strain Over Ter Stegen’s Surgery Announcement

July 25, 2025: Barcelona, Spain – FC Barcelona finds itself navigating a delicate situation after goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen independently announced his upcoming back surgery, a move that has reportedly created tension within the club. While the procedure is crucial for the German international’s persistent back issues, the manner of his disclosure appears to have deviated from the club’s preferred communication strategy.

Ter Stegen took to social media to reveal his decision, stating he expects to be sidelined for “about three months.” This personal statement, however, reportedly preempted Barcelona’s official announcement. According to journalist Álex Pintanel, the club is “upset” about the lack of coordination, having preferred to manage the information internally and prevent leaks before their own public statement. This minor communication breakdown highlights a potential disconnect between the club’s internal protocols and the player’s initiative to share news directly with his followers.

A Longer Recovery Ahead

This will be Ter Stegen’s second back operation, following a herniated disc surgery in late 2023 that kept him out for two months. For this new procedure, Barcelona’s medical staff and external advisors have recommended a more extended recovery period to ensure a definitive solution and prevent future complications. Although the club’s official statement hasn’t specified the exact duration of his absence, Ter Stegen’s own estimate of three months suggests a longer and more complex recovery than his previous one.

The primary focus for FC Barcelona remains Ter Stegen’s full recovery. The club is committed to ensuring he returns in peak physical condition, prioritizing a complete rehabilitation over a rushed comeback. During his absence, the team will need to rely on its backup goalkeepers to maintain their performance across all competitions. Fans, meanwhile, eagerly await Ter Stegen’s return, hoping to see him back on the field with his characteristic talent and confidence.
