FIH Pro League Shake-Up: Ireland In, India Out—What Just Happened?

June 30, 2025: In a major breakthrough for Irish hockey, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has officially confirmed that the Ireland Women’s national team—nicknamed the “Green Army”—will join the FIH Hockey Pro League for the 2025–26 season. This marks Ireland’s debut in what is regarded as the “League of the Best,” spotlighting the top national hockey teams in the world.

Ireland earned its promotion as runners-up at the FIH Hockey Nations Cup held in Chile earlier this year. Although New Zealand won the final against Ireland, Hockey New Zealand later declined their invitation to enter the Pro League. As per FIH regulations, the offer was extended to Ireland, who accepted.

FIH President Tayyab Ikram praised the promotion, saying, “It’s wonderful to see a new team participating in the League of the Best. Qualifying through the Nations Cup proves what a great platform it is for joining hockey’s elite.”

Ireland’s Head Coach Gareth Grundie shared his excitement: “This opportunity comes at a perfect time as we prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualification. It’s a reward for our team’s incredible progress and gives us invaluable experience competing against the world’s best.”

Meanwhile, India, who finished last in the 2024–25 Women’s Pro League season, has been relegated to the Nations Cup.

On the men’s side, FIH has offered New Zealand’s men’s team a Pro League spot after winning the Nations Cup in Malaysia. However, they’ve requested more time to confirm their participation. If they decline, the offer may pass to runners-up Pakistan.
