From Gautam Gambhir To Yuvraj To Harbhajan, Cricketers Pay Tribute To Ashwin Following His Retirement

Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement marks the end of an era in Indian cricket. His remarkable career, which spanned two decades, has left an indelible mark on the sport, particularly in Test cricket. As a bowler, he redefined the art of spin, blending traditional techniques with an unrelenting desire to innovate and improve. His resilience, adaptability, and hunger for knowledge elevated him to the status of one of the greatest spinners in the history of the game.

Ashwin’s announcement of his retirement came after a deeply emotional moment on Day 5 of the Brisbane Test, shared with his longtime teammate, Virat Kohli.

The significance of this moment was not lost on those present, with Gautam Gambhir leading the tributes. Gambhir, who had watched Ashwin’s growth from a promising young bowler to a modern-day legend, expressed his admiration and respect, writing on X: “The privilege of seeing you grow from a young bowler to a legend of modern cricket is something that I wouldn’t trade for the world! I know that generations of bowlers to come will say that I became a bowler coz of Ashwin! U will be missed brother.”

Harbhajan Singh, another legendary Indian spinner, also hailed Ashwin’s contributions to the game, calling him the “flag bearer of Indian spin” for more than a decade. Harbhajan’s words underscore Ashwin’s role in keeping Indian spin bowling at the forefront of world cricket, inspiring countless young bowlers to follow in his footsteps. “Congratulations @ashwinravi99 on a phenomenal cricket career,” Harbhajan wrote. “Your ambition as a Test cricketer was admirable. Well done for being the flag bearer of Indian spin for more than a decade.”

Irfan Pathan, the former all-rounder, described Ashwin as an “absolute match-winner” and acknowledged his immense contribution not only with the ball but also with the bat. Ashwin’s record of 537 wickets in 106 Tests, combined with his 3,503 runs, makes him one of the most accomplished all-rounders of the modern era. “Retiring as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket is nothing short of monumental,” Pathan wrote. “Combine that with his invaluable batting contributions, and you get one of the game’s solid all-rounders.”

Yuvraj Singh took to X (formerly Twitter)and wrote, “Well played Ash and congratulations on a legendary journey! From spinning webs around the best in the world to standing tall in tough situations, you’ve been a real asset to the team. Welcome to the other side!”

In many ways, Ashwin’s impact goes beyond his statistics. His knowledge of the game, his ability to adapt to various conditions, and his consistent performances in all formats have made him an iconic figure in Indian cricket. His retirement may mark the end of an era for Indian spin bowling, but his legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations of cricketers.
