"Future of Kohli and Rohit Sharma in Tests, Gambhir-led coaching staff, and Champions Trophy preparations to dominate discussions as BCCI charts India's cricket roadmap."
January 12, 2025: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has convened a pivotal meeting to review Team India’s performance during the recent tour to Australia and discuss the future of key players Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and head coach Gautam Gambhir. This follows India’s consecutive series defeats to Australia and New Zealand, raising questions about the team’s direction and player performances.

According to sources, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar will meet BCCI officials on Saturday to analyze the performances and chart a future course. The spotlight will be on Kohli and Rohit, both of whom have faced dwindling returns with the bat in Tests.

Transition Plans for Kohli and Rohit
The discussion will focus on whether to initiate a transition period starting with the Champions Trophy next month or wait until the ICC cycle concludes. Kohli and Rohit may be given one last opportunity to showcase their prowess in the Champions Trophy—a format where both have historically excelled.

However, their Test performances against Australia are a cause for concern. Despite Kohli scoring a century in Perth, he averaged only 23.75 across the series, while Rohit’s contribution was even more modest, with just 31 runs at an average of 6.2.
While both players are expected to feature in the Champions Trophy squad, their place in the Test format could face scrutiny as India prepares for a challenging five-match away series against England.
Champions Trophy Selection on the Horizon
The meeting will also finalize India’s squad for the Champions Trophy, scheduled to kick off in the UAE on February 20 with a match against Bangladesh. Selectors will assess the fitness of pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, who are recovering from injuries.
Young stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has impressed in both Tests and T20Is since his debut in mid-2023, are likely to feature prominently in discussions.
England Series Preparations
India’s five-match T20I and three-match ODI series against England, starting January 22, will also be on the agenda. The selectors are expected to retain much of the squad from the South Africa series, with a few additions based on fitness updates for players like Bumrah and Shami.
Promising all-rounders like Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy, who delivered strong performances in Australia, may find a place in the squads.
Coaching Staff Assessment
In addition to player performances, the meeting will evaluate Gambhir’s leadership as head coach and the vision of his coaching staff for handling the transition period without disrupting the team’s stability.
As India eyes a fresh start in 2025, the BCCI’s decisions in the coming days will significantly shape the team’s future trajectory across formats.
