This will be the first formal interaction of Gambhir and Gill in their new leadership roles. The series marks the beginning of a new era for Indian Test cricket, following the transition in both the coaching and captaincy setup.
Shubman Gill, 24, was named India’s 37th Test captain on May 24, replacing Rohit Sharma at the helm. Since making his Test debut against Australia in Melbourne in December 2020, Gill has impressed with his composure and elegant stroke play. He has played 32 Tests so far and is now tasked with leading India through one of the most challenging overseas assignments in world cricket.
Former opener and World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir takes over as head coach, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a no-nonsense approach to leadership. Known for his tactical acumen and fierce competitiveness, Gambhir’s appointment has been met with enthusiasm and high expectations.
The 18-member squad features a mix of youth and experience. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain, marking a remarkable comeback after a long injury layoff. Notable inclusions are young talents like Nitish Reddy, Sai Sudharsan, and Abhimanyu Easwaran, while veterans like Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammed Siraj provide depth and stability.
Full squad:
Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav
India’s tour of England is considered one of the toughest assignments in world cricket, particularly in the longer format. The last time India toured England for a Test series, the final match was postponed and later completed in 2022, with the series ending in a 2-2 draw.
With new leadership in place, both on and off the field, Indian fans will be watching closely to see how Gill and Gambhir usher in a fresh chapter for Indian cricket.
