Legend urges India to attack England with new ball in T20 World Cup semi-final
March 1, 2026: Batting great Sunil Gavaskar has advised India to deploy Jasprit Bumrah for at least two overs in the powerplay during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final against England at Wankhede Stadium. Gavaskar believes early strikes from Bumrah with the new ball could dismantle England’s top order before they settle. Highlighting Bumrah’s economy rate of 6.3 in the Super Eights and his ability to concede few sixes, he said removing key batters like Jos Buttler, Phil Salt and skipper Harry Brook early would “break the back” of England’s innings.
India have used Bumrah flexibly throughout the tournament, often holding overs back for crucial phases. Against West Indies in Kolkata, he delivered decisive blows, dismissing Shimron Hetmyer and Roston Chase in quick succession. Gavaskar noted that what makes Bumrah so dangerous is his constant evolution — from mastering swing both ways to perfecting yorkers and slower bouncers — while giving away minimal cues in his run-up or action. Drawing a comparison to tennis legend Andre Agassi reading Boris Becker’s serve, Gavaskar said batters simply cannot decode Bumrah’s variations.
He also pointed to England all-rounder Will Jacks as a potential game-changer, especially if the pitch offers turn. Jacks has been among England’s standout performers, contributing with both bat and off-spin. However, Gavaskar stressed that Buttler’s current lean patch could work in India’s favour, provided Bumrah strikes early. With both teams boasting explosive line-ups, the tactical battle at the Wankhede promises to be decisive in shaping the road to the final.
