Grief and Glory: Family, Fans, and Liverpool Teammates Bid Farewell to Diogo Jota and Brother André Silva
July-5, 2025: A wave of sorrow swept through Gondomar, Portugal, on Saturday as family, friends, fans, and Liverpool teammates gathered to bid farewell to Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who tragically died in a car crash in Spain just days earlier.
The 28-year-old Liverpool forward, who had married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso only 11 days prior, was en route back to Liverpool for pre-season training. Due to recent minor surgery, Jota had opted to travel by car and ferry, avoiding air travel on medical advice. Officials say the car veered off the road after a tyre blowout while overtaking, resulting in the fatal accident.
The funeral took place at the Igreja de Matriz in their hometown, with an overwhelming turnout of supporters, teammates, and loved ones. Many mourners stood in silent respect in the streets, listening to a live audio broadcast of the service.
Inside the church, Liverpool players Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson carried floral tributes shaped like red football jerseys, bearing the numbers 20 and 30, worn by Diogo and André. These were later placed on their graves, alongside a message from Liverpool Football Club ending with the poignant words: “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

The funeral ended with quiet processions into the church cemetery, where the brothers were laid to rest in a private ceremony.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot shared heartfelt words:
“Diogo was not just our player. He was a loved one to all of us. He was a teammate, a colleague, a workmate—and in all of those roles, he was very special.”
Locals, too, spoke of the brothers’ impact beyond the pitch. “They’ve left Gondomar a better place for having lived,” one mourner said as crowds slowly cleared from the streets, leaving the quiet town to grieve its most cherished sons.
Jota, remembered not only for his brilliance on the field but also for his humility off it, leaves behind a young family—his wife Rute and their three children. André Silva, a professional footballer in Portugal, was also known for his dedication and close bond with his elder brother.
Tributes have poured in from clubs across Europe where Jota played, including Wolverhampton Wanderers, FC Porto, and Atlético Madrid.

As the football world continues to mourn, Saturday’s farewell in Gondomar served as both a celebration of their lives and a reminder of their lasting impact, on and off the pitch.
