World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju to face the world’s highest-rated player Magnus Carlsen in a thrilling battle on Carlsen’s home turf.

December 17, 2024: The chess world is abuzz with excitement as World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju prepares to face Magnus Carlsen, the world’s highest-rated player, at the upcoming Norway Chess 2025. The highly anticipated showdown will unfold in Stavanger, Norway, from May 26 to June 6, 2025.

Gukesh, at just 18 years old, has had a meteoric rise in the chess world, culminating in his recent World Championship title victory in Singapore. His spectacular year includes triumphs at the Tata Steel Masters, leading India to gold at the Chess Olympiad, and dominating the Candidates Tournament.

“I’m excited to face the strongest players in the world again in Norway, and also the Armageddons will be fun,” Gukesh said in a media statement.

Norway Chess holds special significance for Gukesh, who finished third in Stavanger in 2023. Now, returning as the reigning World Champion, he will face Carlsen in the latter’s home territory, promising an epic clash of experience versus youthful brilliance.
