Handshake Snub Marks Tense India vs Bangladesh U-19 Clash

Diplomatic strain spills onto field as teams meet in Group A World Cup match

January 17, 2026: The growing diplomatic and sporting strain between India and Bangladesh was on full display during their Group A encounter at the Under-19 World Cup 2026, as captains Ayush Mhatre and Zawad Abrar notably skipped the customary pre-match handshake. The moment quickly went viral, symbolising the tense relations between the two sides. Adding to the intrigue, Bangladesh skipper Azizul Hakim, despite being named in the playing XI, did not attend the toss, with deputy captain Abrar stepping in instead.

After a rain delay in Bulawayo, Abrar won the toss and opted to bowl first, citing the damp conditions that could assist his pace attack early on. The backdrop to the match has been heightened by ongoing friction between the BCCI and BCB, following recent IPL contract disputes and disagreements over venues for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which have strained cricketing ties between the neighbours.

Focusing on the game, Abrar expressed confidence in Bangladesh’s bowling unit and their preparation, while Mhatre said India were equally keen to exploit the conditions but were ready to bat first if required. With both sides eyeing early advantage on a tricky surface, the clash promised not just competitive cricket, but also a reflection of the larger off-field tensions shaping the contest.
