Hockey India Congratulates PR Sreejesh On Being Honoured With Padma Bhushan

January 26, 2025: Hockey India congratulated former Indian Men’s Hockey Team goalkeeper PR Sreejesh on receiving the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India.

Sreejesh, revered as the “God of Modern Indian Hockey,” becomes only the second hockey player to be awarded the Padma Bhushan, after the legendary Major Dhyan Chand, who was honored with the award in 1956.

Sreejesh’s remarkable 18-year career saw him play 336 international matches for India, and his goalkeeping skills were crucial in securing medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the Paris 2024 Olympics, where India won bronze. Along with numerous accolades such as being named FIH Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021, 2022, and 2024, the Arjuna Award in 2015, and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2021, Sreejesh’s legacy has been cemented both on the field and as a coach. Under his guidance, the Indian Junior Hockey Team won the Junior Asia Cup in 2024.

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey praised Sreejesh’s monumental contribution to the sport, both as a player and as a mentor, while Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh highlighted Sreejesh’s dedication and perseverance.

Sreejesh, expressing his gratitude upon receiving the Padma Bhushan, thanked the Government of India for the honor and acknowledged the support of his teammates, coaches, and support staff throughout his career. He also paid tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, whose legacy continues to inspire Indian hockey.

Sreejesh’s incredible journey also includes participation in four Olympic Games, multiple Asian Games and Commonwealth Games medals, and significant contributions to India’s triumphs in the Asian Champions Trophy. His legacy as the “Great Wall of Indian Hockey” will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
