Humpy Koneru Set To Return To Norway Chess Women Tournament 2025

January 15, 2025: India’s top-ranked female chess player, Humpy Koneru, is set to make her return to the prestigious Norway Chess Women 2025 tournament. Currently ranked World No.6 in women’s classical chess, Humpy is aiming to showcase her skills on a global platform once again.

Humpy’s illustrious career has been marked by groundbreaking achievements. In 2002, she became the first Indian woman to earn the Grandmaster title, securing her place in chess history. Over the years, she has consistently remained India’s No.1 in women’s chess and has gained international respect. She has won the World Rapid Championship title twice, in 2019 and 2024, and was honored as BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year in 2020. Her victories in the Chess Olympiad, Asian Games, and Asian Championships have solidified her status as one of the top female players in the sport.

As one of only two female players in history to cross the 2600 rating mark, Humpy’s return to Norway Chess Women 2025 will allow her to further demonstrate her exceptional talent. Her presence in the tournament underscores her ongoing commitment to competing at the highest level.

“It’s an honour to play in the prestigious Norway Chess Women tournament,” said Humpy Koneru. When asked to describe herself, she emphasized the importance of being “self-disciplined,” a quality that has played a significant role in her rise to the top of the chess world.

Humpy’s participation continues to inspire aspiring chess players, especially young women both in India and globally. Her journey exemplifies how determination and discipline can lead to extraordinary success.

“Humpy’s achievements speak volumes, and we are delighted to welcome her back to Norway Chess Women 2025,” said Kjell Madland, Founder and Tournament Director of Norway Chess.

Norway Chess is one of the premier chess tournaments in the world, featuring top male and female players in a 6-player double round-robin format. The introduction of Norway Chess Women in 2024, with equal prize funds for both men and women, reflects the tournament’s commitment to gender equality. Norway Chess 2025 is scheduled to take place from May 26 to June 6. Humpy Koneru, as the third-highest rated female player in the event, is expected to be a strong contender for the title.
