ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Breaks Viewership Records In India, Surpasses World Cup 2023

March 22, 2025: The ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 has shattered major viewership records in India, surpassing even the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in terms of TV ratings. The tournament, which garnered attention across multiple platforms, saw its live broadcast reach unprecedented heights. According to a media release from the International Cricket Council (ICC), the event received a total watch time of 137 billion minutes on Star Sports and 110 billion minutes on JioHotstar.

A significant contributing factor to these record-breaking numbers was the thrilling final between India and New Zealand on March 9 in Dubai. This match alone saw an incredible peak concurrency of 122 million live viewers on TV and 61 million on JioHotstar, setting a new benchmark for digital viewership in cricket.

The final between India and New Zealand became the second-highest-rated ODI in TV history, outside of ICC Cricket World Cup matches. The final match reached 230 million viewers globally, with 53 billion minutes of total watch time across both TV and digital platforms.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah expressed his delight over the viewership statistics, emphasizing how the return of the Champions Trophy after eight years had captivated Indian audiences. He also acknowledged the massive impact that the marketing strategy, which included broadcasting in multiple languages, had on the success of the tournament.

“The Champions Trophy made an amazing return after eight years, and the viewership numbers from India have been overwhelming, particularly for the final between India and New Zealand,” Shah said. He also noted that the final had become one of the highest-rated ODIs in history.

On the digital front, the tournament’s success was bolstered by JioStar’s technological capabilities and its multi-platform sports broadcasting strategy. CEO of Sports, Jio Star, Sanjog Gupta, highlighted how their tailored marketing efforts had helped them engage differentiated audience segments across various devices, contributing to the remarkable viewership figures.

The high-profile encounter between archrivals India and Pakistan also played a significant role in the event’s viewership surge. The match, held on February 23 in Dubai, became one of the most-watched ODI matches in India, with over 26 billion minutes of watch time on linear TV. This figure was a 10.8% increase compared to the India-Pakistan match in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, demonstrating the tournament’s widespread appeal and the growing passion for cricket in India.

To cater to the diverse cricket audience, JioStar provided extensive coverage across a wide range of languages, offering streams in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and more. Additionally, the tournament was available across 16 digital feeds, including multi-cam views and an Indian Sign Language feed, making it accessible to even more viewers.

The ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 has certainly marked a historic milestone in cricket broadcasting, with its extraordinary viewership numbers reflecting the sport’s immense popularity and the growing engagement of cricket fans worldwide.
