ICC Rejects Bangladesh Adviser’s Security Claims
Global cricket body denies sharing threat assessment for T20 World Cup 2026
January 13, 2026: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has firmly rejected claims made by Bangladesh’s Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul, who alleged that the global body had validated security concerns for the Bangladesh team during the 2026 T20 World Cup in India. Nazrul had claimed that the ICC identified specific scenarios that could increase risks for Bangladeshi players and fans, suggesting this supported his anti-India stance. However, the ICC promptly issued a clarification stating that no such assessment had been shared with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
In its official response, the ICC said the T20 World Cup 2026 will go ahead as scheduled and that overall security risks in India have been assessed as “low to moderate,” a level consistent with most major international sporting events. Reports citing independent risk assessments further noted that there are no specific or direct threats aimed at the Bangladesh team, its officials, or match venues in India. The ICC stressed that its position remains unchanged and that all participating nations are expected to adhere to the tournament’s Terms of Participation.
Nazrul’s remarks had sparked controversy after he claimed the ICC warned of heightened risks if pacer Mustafizur Rahman was selected, if Bangladeshi fans wore national jerseys in public, or as Bangladesh’s elections draw closer. The ICC’s rebuttal has directly contradicted these assertions, leaving Bangladesh’s sports leadership facing criticism over the claims. The governing body is expected to issue a more detailed communication soon to formally close the matter.
