ICC Revises Media Accreditation Process
Move follows Bangladesh team’s withdrawal from T20 World Cup in India
January 27, 2026: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is reworking its media accreditation process for Bangladeshi journalists seeking to cover the T20 World Cup in India, following Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the tournament citing security concerns. The move comes after several journalists from Bangladesh claimed their accreditation requests were rejected. ICC sources said the process is being adjusted due to changes in schedules and the number of applications received.
According to sources, around 80–90 Bangladeshi journalists had applied for accreditation, but the ICC follows a country-wise quota system that typically limits approvals to about 40, based on recommendations from the host board. Officials clarified that even when a national team participates, it is not possible to accommodate all media requests, and applications are assessed accordingly.
In Dhaka, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) media manager Amjad Hossain said the matter has been taken up with the ICC and an explanation has been sought. Some senior Bangladeshi journalists expressed surprise over the rejection of their applications, calling it unprecedented. Despite the ICC assessing no security threat to the Bangladesh team in India, the BCB chose not to travel, leading the ICC to replace Bangladesh with Scotland for the tournament starting February 7.
