India started the match on a dominant note, posting 359/3 on Day 1, with captain Shubman Gill leading from the front with a commanding 147. Contributions poured in from Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant (who scored across both innings), pushing India to a seemingly strong total of 471. However, a middle-order collapse on Day 2 prevented them from posting a massive lead.
England responded robustly with 465 in their first innings. In reply, India’s second innings crumbled on Day 4, losing their last few wickets quickly. What was once a target of over 430 got reduced to 371 — a figure England would chase down with assertive confidence on Day 5.
At the post-match presentation, Gill accepted India’s shortcomings.
“A brilliant Test, we had our chances. Dropped catches, lower order not contributing cost us,” he said, reflecting on the missed opportunities.
India’s batting faltered late in the second innings, and Gill admitted that this cost them the match.
“Yesterday, we were thinking of giving them 430, but our last wickets fell for 25,” he lamented.
“Even today, I thought we had our chances after the brilliant first wicket. Didn’t go to hand.”
Despite a strong showing with the ball in the morning session on Day 5, India’s bowling lacked bite as the Dukes ball aged.
“The first session, we bowled spot-on. Didn’t give away runs, but it’s hard to stop runs once it gets old,” Gill explained.
“Have to keep taking wickets when the ball got soft.”
He praised Ravindra Jadeja for his consistent effort.
“Jadeja bowled brilliantly, created chances,” he noted.
Gill also spoke about the importance of learning from mistakes, acknowledging the youth of the squad.
“We spoke about the first-innings collapse. Happens, we have to rectify that going forward. Chances don’t come easy on wickets like this, but we have a young team. Learning one. Hope to improve that.”
Regarding Jasprit Bumrah’s workload and future Test management, Gill stated:
“It’s decided game-by-game. Once we’re close to the next game after a long break, we’ll see.”
