Inside Shubman Gill’s 5-Hour Meeting With Gambhir On India Captaincy
May 17, 2025: With Rohit Sharma stepping down from Test cricket, rising star Shubman Gill has emerged as the frontrunner to lead India’s Test team, according to several reports. The decision could be made ahead of India’s England tour starting June 20, marking the beginning of a new World Test Championship cycle.

A report revealed that Gill recently met with India head coach Gautam Gambhir for a lengthy discussion in Delhi, and also had a one-on-one with chief selector Ajit Agarkar after an IPL match at Wankhede on May 6. The BCCI reportedly sees Gill, who is currently captaining Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, as a long-term leadership option.
“He has shown impressive leadership qualities,” a BCCI source said, pointing to Gujarat Titans’ strong showing under his captaincy.
However, not everyone is convinced Gill should take the reins just yet. Ravichandran Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel, offered alternate options like Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, emphasizing the value of experience.
“If you’re thinking about a fresh captain, why not let him work under a senior leader for a couple of years first?” Ashwin suggested, noting Jadeja’s vast Test experience—3370 runs and 323 wickets in 80 Tests.
The official announcement is expected later in May, and with Kohli and Rohit retired from the format, the decision could shape Indian cricket’s next phase in the longest format.
