Inter Miami Star Luis Suárez Banned for On-Field Spitting Incident
Inter Miami forward Luis Suárez has been suspended for six matches in the Leagues Cup after he was caught spitting at a rival staff member. The ban adds another chapter to the star’s long and controversial disciplinary record.
September 6, 2025: Luis Suárez, a forward for Inter Miami, has been banned from six games by the Leagues Cup disciplinary board after getting into a fight with Seattle Sounders staff after a game. The ban will be in place for the 2026 event. It comes after cameras caught Suárez spitting at a Sounders staff member after Miami lost 3-0 in the Leagues Cup final.
Suárez has a long history of getting in trouble, including several biting episodes and a ban for making racist comments. This is the most recent instance. After the fight, in which Suárez also put an opposing player in a headlock, the Uruguayan star apologized publicly on Instagram.
Wider Disciplinary Actions and MLS’s Position Suárez wasn’t the only one who had to deal with the fallout. Inter Miami players Sergio Busquets and Tomás Avilés were banned from playing for two and three matches, respectively. Steven Lenhart, a coach for the Seattle Sounders, was banned from playing for five matches.
The Leagues Cup committee has made its decision, but Major League Soccer (MLS) still has the power to punish the players and personnel implicated even more. There is a chance that the league will impose more penalties on Suárez, which could affect his availability for the rest of the 2025 MLS season. However, no decision has been made yet.
