April 17, 2025: Australia’s star fast bowler Mitchell Starc played a pivotal role in Delhi Capitals’ nail-biting Super Over win against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Starc, who was entrusted with the task of bowling the Super Over, produced a brilliant performance, conceding just 11 runs while picking up two crucial wickets. RR’s Riyan Parag (4) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (0) were sent back in quick succession, leaving them with no chance to post a competitive score.
In response, Delhi Capitals chased down the 12-run target with ease, completing the Super Over in just four balls, with openers confidently sealing the win. Starc’s performance earned him the Player of the Match award, further cementing his reputation as a key player in high-pressure moments.

Dale Steyn, former South African pacer, also took to social media to defend Starc, pointing out that performances like his are the reason why players are paid big bucks in the IPL, with a tweet saying, “That’s why you pay him the big bucks.”
Starc’s IPL journey has often been under scrutiny, primarily due to his hefty price tag. Purchased by Delhi Capitals for ₹11.75 crores in the IPL 2025 mega auction, Starc was the franchise’s second-most expensive buy. His previous stint with Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, where he was the highest-priced player, has kept fans and critics alike closely following his performances. However, Starc proved his worth with a match-winning performance, silencing many of the doubters.
DC are currently at the top of the IPL 2025 points table with five wins in six matches, and the team’s next challenge comes against Gujarat Titans on April 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Following his Super Over heroics, Starc spoke in the post-match presentation about staying calm and executing his plan. He said, “Just backed my execution, running in with a clear plan. Sometimes it comes off, a bit of luck goes a long way. It was a fantastic game, happy to get on the right side. I’ve played long enough for everyone to know what I’d do, but if I execute, then I know I’ll get by. A bit of luck goes a long way.”
