Chennai Super Kings legend MS Dhoni gets emotional about fan support, says IPL remains his connection with cricket after international retirement.
New Delhi, March 25: Indian cricket legend MS Dhoni has opened up about the deep gratitude he feels towards fans for their unwavering love and support throughout his Indian Premier League (IPL) journey. Speaking on JioHotstar, the former India skipper and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) icon reflected on the overwhelming fanfare that follows him, especially during what many believe could be the final phase of his IPL career.
“I have always said it’s a big ‘thank you’ from the fans’ side. That’s what I believe. Whatever last few years I’m in and will be playing, it’s a way of them saying, ‘Thank you very much for whatever you have done,’ and it’s amazing,” Dhoni said.
“India is the Place to Play”: Dhoni on Cricket & Fan Culture
Dhoni emphasized that playing in front of Indian fans is a dream for any cricketer, adding that the IPL has become his connection to the sport after retiring from international cricket in 2020.
“Especially when you play a sport, what you want is fans’ appreciation. And when it comes to cricket, India is the place to play,” he said.
“Even now, when I walk out to bat, fans still want me to perform—even when I’m playing against the team they support. It’s an amazing feeling,” Dhoni added.
Approaching a Historic CSK Milestone
At 43, Dhoni continues to feature in the IPL as a finisher, often arriving late in the innings to hit quick boundaries and fire up the crowd. While his role has diminished over time, his impact remains iconic.
He is now just 19 runs away from becoming Chennai Super Kings’ all-time leading run-scorer in the IPL, a record currently held by Suresh Raina, who amassed 4,687 runs for the franchise.
