March 19, 2025: Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss the initial stages of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 due to an ongoing injury, as confirmed by Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene on Wednesday. The fast bowler is currently recovering from back spasms, which he sustained during the second day of the final Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Following the injury, Bumrah underwent scans and has since been undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Although there were initial hopes for his quick return, Bumrah has not yet played any cricket since the series and is still on the road to recovery.

Speaking to the media during a press conference, Jayawardene provided an update on Bumrah’s condition, saying, “Jasprit is at the moment with NCA. He has just started his progress. We have to wait and see what their BCCI medical team’s feedback is on him. At the moment, everything is going well. But obviously, it is on a day-to-day basis. He is in good spirits.” He also acknowledged the challenge of playing without one of the best fast bowlers in the world, adding, “Not having him is a challenge. He has been a fantastic pro for us for many years.”
The Mumbai Indians coach further emphasized the team’s efforts to find an alternative to fill the gap created by Bumrah’s absence. “We’ll have to wait or find an opportunity for someone else to step up. That’s how I see it. It gives us an element of trying a few things and seeing how things work. The early part of the season allows us to do that,” Jayawardene explained.
Bumrah’s absence comes as a major setback for Mumbai Indians, given his key role in the team’s bowling attack. The franchise will be hoping that Bumrah can recover soon and rejoin the squad once he is fully fit.
Mumbai Indians’ first match of IPL 2025 is scheduled for Sunday, March 23, against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
