IPL 2026: KKR Appoints Abhishek Nayar As New Head Coach

The long-serving assistant and acclaimed mentor replaces Chandrakant Pandit, tasked with reviving the three-time champions after their 8th-place finish in the 2025 IPL.

October 30, 2025: The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) officially announced a major change in their leadership structure on Thursday, appointing former Indian cricketer and long-time franchise member Abhishek Nayar as the team’s new Head Coach. Nayar steps in to replace the IPL 2024-winning coach, Chandrakant Pandit, following a dismal campaign in the 2025 season.

The decision comes after a challenging year for the three-time IPL champions, who failed to defend their title under Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy. KKR managed to win just five of their 14 matches, ultimately finishing in the eighth position on the points table.

Continuity and Mentorship

Nayar’s appointment signals KKR’s strategic focus on continuity and internal development. He has been an indispensable part of the Knight Riders setup since 2018, having worked extensively within the team’s support staff and academy structure.

Venky Mysore, CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders, highlighted Nayar’s deep connection with the team: “Abhishek has been a vital part of the Knight Riders setup since 2018, shaping our players both on and off the field. His understanding of the game and connection with players have been key to our growth. We are thrilled to see him take over as Head Coach and lead KKR into its next chapter.”

A Proven Player-Developer

Hailing from Mumbai, Nayar is widely respected in the domestic circuit for his keen eye for talent and his renowned mentoring approach. His coaching expertise is credited for the rise of several young talents within the franchise, including star finisher Rinku Singh and fast bowler Harshit Rana.

Nayar was also a key part of the backroom staff during KKR’s most recent title triumph in IPL 2024. Furthermore, he brings high-level experience, having served as the Assistant Coach of the Indian men’s national team under Head Coach Gautam Gambhir in 2024, working closely with the country’s top players.

This appointment marks a new and exciting chapter for the Knight Riders as they look to build on their past successes and prepare for the upcoming season with a coach who fully understands the team’s ethos and long-term vision.
