Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have received a massive shot in the arm as Sri Lankan speedster Matheesha Pathirana has reportedly been granted a No Objection Certificate (NOC) by Sri Lanka Cricket to join the franchise for IPL 2026.

According to reports, the pacer is set to travel to Chennai to link up with the squad immediately. This news comes at a critical juncture for KKR, who have suffered a nightmare start to the season and currently languish at the bottom of the points table.

Pathirana’s arrival is a relief for the KKR management, who spent a record ₹18 crore at the auction to secure his services. His participation was shrouded in uncertainty after he sustained a left-leg injury during the T20 World Cup 2026, where he managed to bowl only four deliveries in a match against Australia. Known for his “slingshot” action and lethal yorkers, Pathirana’s presence is expected to fix KKR’s glaring issues in the death overs—a weakness that was ruthlessly exploited by Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants in recent defeats.

The 23-year-old is no stranger to IPL success. Having previously spearheaded the attack for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Pathirana bagged 47 wickets in 32 matches and was instrumental in their 2023 title victory. KKR will be hoping he brings that same championship pedigree to a side that has looked disjointed under captain Ajinkya Rahane. With big-money signing Cameron Green struggling for form and the bowling unit leaking runs, Pathirana’s ability to deliver under pressure is exactly what the two-time champions need to stay alive in the tournament.

KKR’s next challenge is a high-stakes encounter against CSK in Chennai. While the spin duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy will look to exploit the Chepauk surface, Pathirana’s pace and variation will provide the necessary balance. As the franchise desperate seeks to climb out of the basement, the Sri Lankan “Baby Malinga” might just be the X-factor required to turn their fortunes around.
