Chennai Super Kings (CSK) finally opened their account in IPL 2026 with a 23-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, but skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad remains far from satisfied. Despite the win, which pushed CSK to ninth in the standings and moved Kolkata Knight Riders to the bottom, Gaikwad offered a blunt assessment of his bowling unit, admitting they lack a certain “X-factor” compared to other heavyweights in the league.
The victory was built on a monumental batting performance by Sanju Samson, who played a blistering unbeaten knock of 115 off just 56 balls*. Striking at a massive 205.36 and laced with 14 boundaries and four sixes, Samson’s masterclass powered CSK to a formidable total of 212/2. In response, DC showed spark through Tristan Stubbs (60) and Pathum Nissanka (41), but eventually folded for 189. Jamie Overton was the star with the ball, claiming a decisive four-wicket haul, while Anshul Kamboj provided excellent support with three scalps.
However, Gaikwad’s post-match comments focused on the areas where his team is still vulnerable. “Well, definitely we don’t have that X-factor in our bowling lineup,” Gaikwad stated candidly. He emphasized that in the absence of a “fear factor” bowler, the team must rely on being proactive and disciplined with their lengths. While he praised the middle-over comeback after a rocky powerplay, he noted that “one or two odd overs” going for 20-25 runs has been a recurring nightmare for the franchise this season.
Despite the tactical concerns, the atmosphere in Chennai remained electric. Gaikwad took a moment to credit the “Yellow Army” for their unwavering loyalty. “Chennai fans, they are always there behind us, no matter what… it is just about lovely people just enjoying the cricket and loving the franchise,” he added. As CSK looks to climb further up the table, the focus remains squarely on whether their “proactive” bowling strategy can compensate for the missing firepower in the death overs.
