"Hard to explain what happened": Shreyas Iyer on loss against RR
After a heart-wrenching two-wicket defeat to Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer found it difficult to articulate the team’s performance. The match, characterized by its nail-biting finish, left the captain and the team grappling with a mix of emotions.
Reflecting on the game’s final moments, Iyer described the experience as a roller-coaster of emotions, particularly unexpected given the match’s critical phases. “It’s a tough one to digest. Just when you think you have the game in your hand, it slips away. It’s hard to pinpoint what exactly went wrong, but it’s cricket, and these things happen. We just have to accept it and prepare to bounce back,” Iyer said during the post-match press conference.
The skipper emphasized the need for introspection and resilience, vowing that the team would analyze their performance thoroughly and use the insights to improve in upcoming matches. He praised Sunil Narine’s exceptional performance, who not only scored a century but also took crucial wickets, reinforcing his value to the team. “Narine continues to be a pivotal player for us, delivering both with the bat and ball. It’s players like him that you need during such high-pressure tournaments,” Iyer remarked.
Addressing the decision-making in the game’s final overs, Iyer discussed the strategic choices made, including the use of spinners to counteract Jos Buttler’s aggressive batting. “We tried to mix things up a bit, especially against Buttler, who was quite set. We thought taking the pace off the ball might help, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out as planned,” he explained.
Concluding his thoughts, Iyer stressed the importance of moving past the disappointment quickly. “The key now is to not dwell too much on this loss but to learn and come back stronger. We have a quick turnaround in matches, and we’ll be looking to rectify our mistakes and improve our game strategy,” he added.
With this loss, KKR needs to regroup fast as they continue to contend for a top spot in a fiercely competitive IPL season.
