Axar Patel Credits MS Dhoni for Mentorship That Changed His Game

Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel has spoken candidly about the pivotal role MS Dhoni has played in shaping his career, both as a cricketer and a leader. In a heartfelt video shared on Delhi Capitals’ official Instagram handle, Axar revealed the deep bond he shares with the former India skipper and how Dhoni’s guidance helped him overcome difficult phases.
“I have a very close connection with Mahi bhai,” said Axar. “When he was the captain of the Indian team, I used to share my thoughts with him.”
Axar highlighted how Dhoni’s mentoring during major tournaments like the 2021 T20 World Cup, where the legendary captain served as a mentor, left a lasting impact.
“After the World Cup and Champions Trophy, he sent me a message. We spoke during the 2021 World Cup, and I told him about what I was going through mentally. After that, if you see my performances, a little credit definitely goes to Mahi bhai. Things changed,” Axar added.
He credited Dhoni’s calm advice and mentorship for helping him recalibrate his mindset, which translated into better on-field performances. The bond between the two cricketers exemplifies the legacy of Dhoni as a guiding figure for India’s younger generation of players.
Under Axar’s leadership, Delhi Capitals have made a strong start to IPL 2025, winning both their matches so far and climbing to second place in the standings. They now gear up to face Chennai Super Kings (CSK) — Dhoni’s long-time franchise — on Saturday at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
