IPL 2025 – MS Dhoni on Impact Player Rule: ‘It Helps, But It Doesn’t’

CSK skipper Dhoni says high-scoring games aren’t just about the Impact Player — it’s mindset, conditions, and confidence that define today’s T20 cricket.

Mumbai, March 25: Legendary Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni has weighed in on the much-debated Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL), calling it a double-edged sword — one that empowers teams but also challenges balance and player growth.

Speaking on The MSD Experience on JioHotstar, Dhoni candidly shared that while the rule brings a tactical edge, it also changes the essence of how the T20 format is played and strategised.

“When the Impact Player rule was introduced in 2023, I felt it wasn’t really needed at the time,” Dhoni said. “In a way, it helps me. But at the same time, it doesn’t. I still do my wicketkeeping, so I have to stay involved. I am never going to be the one subbed out.”

Not Just the Rule — It’s the Mindset:

While the rule has often been blamed for an explosion in high-scoring T20 matches, Dhoni believes the real change lies in the mindset of modern players and the evolving match conditions.

“Yes, scores are going up, but that’s not just because of one extra batsman. It’s the comfort level — knowing there’s backup makes players go harder. Even if you don’t use the extra batter, having that cushion makes a difference. That’s how T20 cricket has evolved,” he explained.

On Rivalries: MI or Not, It’s About Winning:

When asked if he thrives particularly in matches against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI), Dhoni downplayed the rivalry narrative, staying true to his team-first philosophy.

“For me, the opposition doesn’t matter. It’s always about winning the match. Yes, people love the idea of rivalries like CSK vs MI, and it’s great for the league, but as a player, your mindset needs to remain neutral. You perform for your team — whether it’s Mumbai or any other side,” he added.

Dhoni further acknowledged that rivalries fuel fan engagement and bring intensity to games, but reminded that from a player’s perspective, “every game counts the same in terms of points.”
