IPL 2025: Robin Uthappa Says MS Dhoni Still Central to CSK’s Strategy Despite Limited Appearances
New Delhi, April 9: Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa believes MS Dhoni remains a vital cog in Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) setup, even if his appearances with the bat have been limited this IPL season. Speaking on Match Centre Live on JioCinema, Uthappa emphasized Dhoni’s ongoing contribution as a leader and mentor, helping shape the team’s long-term vision.
“I don’t think there was ever a lack of intent from MS Dhoni,” said Uthappa. “Even beyond the IPL, he’s been preparing younger players, passing on responsibility, and providing clarity for the future. While we’d love to see him bat more and higher up the order, I don’t think CSK’s problem lies at the finish. The transition is clearly happening under his guidance.”
Dhoni once again showed flashes of brilliance during CSK’s recent clash with Punjab Kings (PBKS), entering at No. 5 with 69 runs needed from 25 balls. The 43-year-old veteran turned back the clock, smashing 27 off just 12 deliveries, including three towering sixes and a four, before falling on the first ball of the final over — a valiant effort in a high-stakes chase.
Despite Dhoni’s late charge, CSK fell short by 18 runs, marking their fourth loss in five games this season. The team has notably not batted first in any of their matches so far in IPL 2025, which some critics suggest could be affecting their momentum.
Uthappa also compared Dhoni’s explosive outing in Mohali with his earlier 30 off 26 against Delhi Capitals at Chepauk, noting the significant improvement in intent and aggression. “This innings was far more impactful — exactly the kind of fight you want to see at the death,” Uthappa added.
Statistically, Dhoni continues to impress. He’s the sixth-highest run-scorer in IPL history, with 5,346 runs at an average of 39.31 and a strike rate of 137+, including 24 fifties and a highest score of 84. In IPL 2025, he’s already amassed 103 runs in 5 innings at an impressive average of 51.50 and a strike rate of 153.73.
As CSK look to bounce back in their next fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders at home, Dhoni’s leadership and late-inning heroics may yet prove crucial to turning their campaign around.
