Mumbai Indians’ opener Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a four-ball duck by Khaleel Ahmed, marking his 18th duck in IPL history — now tied with Dinesh Karthik and Glenn Maxwell.
Chennai | March 23, 2025
Rohit Sharma had a nightmare start to his IPL 2025 campaign, registering a duck in his very first outing against Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk. Facing Khaleel Ahmed, the former Mumbai Indians skipper lasted just four deliveries before flicking one straight into the hands of Shivam Dube at mid-wicket.
This dismissal marked Rohit’s 18th duck in IPL history, drawing him level with Glenn Maxwell and Dinesh Karthik for the most ducks in the tournament’s history. It was also the third time Khaleel Ahmed has dismissed him in the IPL — clearly a personal bogey bowler for the ‘Hitman’.

Despite arriving in the tournament on a high — having scored a key half-century in India’s Champions Trophy win over New Zealand — Rohit couldn’t carry that momentum into the league opener.

🎙️ Rohit’s Pre-Match Words Now Ring Hollow
Speaking before the match, Rohit had expressed his desire to finally break MI’s streak of losing opening games — they’ve lost their first match of the season for 12 straight years.
“We’ve come close, but not quite there in season openers. It’s a new team and we don’t want to put pressure on ourselves. Hopefully, this year is different,” Rohit had told JioHotstar.
But MI’s woes continued. With Hardik Pandya serving a one-match ban due to last season’s over-rate violations, Suryakumar Yadav led the side. However, CSK won the toss and opted to bowl first — a decision that paid off handsomely.
📋 MI XI Highlights:
- Rohit Sharma (duck)
- Suryakumar Yadav (Captain)
- Ryan Rickelton and Satyanarayana Raju made their IPL debuts
- Will Jacks (ex-RCB) and Mitchell Santner (ex-CSK) debuted for MI
Despite a couple of decent knocks by Tilak Varma and SKY, Mumbai ended with just 155/9, struggling under the weight of CSK’s bowling attack, especially Noor Ahmad’s 4-wicket haul.
