A brilliant 90-run stand between Sundar and Shubman Gill powers GT to a seven-wicket win; all-rounder relishes rare opportunity at No. 4
Hyderabad, April 7: Gujarat Titans’ all-rounder Washington Sundar played a match-defining knock of 49 off 29 balls, forging a game-changing 90-run partnership with captain Shubman Gill to script a comfortable seven-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in their IPL 2025 clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday.
Sundar’s explosive innings, laced with five boundaries and two sixes, came at a striking rate of 168.97 and helped the Titans recover from an early collapse at 16/2 during a modest 153-run chase.
“Skipper told me to bat deep and finish the game. The wicket tends to get better here while chasing, and I was aware of that. Coach sent me in early after the top-order collapse, and I enjoyed the rare opportunity to bat at No. 4,” Sundar shared during the post-match presentation.
🔹 The Match at a Glance:
After winning the toss, GT chose to field first. SRH once again faltered at the top with Travis Head (8), Abhishek Sharma (18), and Ishan Kishan (17) failing to make an impact. Despite a 50-run partnership between Nitish Kumar Reddy (31) and Heinrich Klaasen (27), and a late cameo by *Pat Cummins (22 off 9)**, SRH posted just 152/8.
GT pacers Prasidh Krishna (2/25) and Sai Kishore (2/24) kept the hosts in check, while Mohammed Siraj bagged the Player of the Match for his 4/17 spell.
🔹 Shaky Start, Strong Finish
GT’s chase started on a poor note, with Sai Sudharsan (5) and Jos Buttler (0) dismissed early. But Gill (61 off 43 balls) and Sundar took control with a 90-run stand. Their calculated aggression helped GT reach 100 in the 12th over and dismantle any hopes of a Sunrisers comeback.
Once Sundar fell at 106/3, Sherfane Rutherford took over with a powerful unbeaten 35 off 16 balls, finishing the game in style as GT reached the target in 16.4 overs with 20 balls to spare.
🔹 What This Means:
- Gujarat Titans: 3 wins in 4 matches, now 2nd in IPL 2025 standings
- Sunrisers Hyderabad: 4 losses in 5 matches, slipping further down the table
With a balanced performance across departments and strong depth in the batting line-up, GT continue to impress, while SRH’s top order woes remain a pressing concern heading into their next fixture.
