The Indian Premier League debut of Praful Hinge unfolded in unusual fashion on Saturday, April 11 — raising the curious question of whether the debut actually happened at all.

The 24-year-old Vidarbha pacer was initially named in the Playing XI for Sunrisers Hyderabad by captain Ishan Kishan, but he never stepped onto the field after being replaced during the innings break.

Named at Toss, But Plans Changed Midway

At the toss, Ishan Kishan confirmed that Praful Hinge would make his IPL debut, replacing experienced pacer Jaydev Unadkat in the starting XI.

The decision hinted at a bold move from Sunrisers Hyderabad, offering an opportunity to a bowler known largely for his performances in red-ball cricket rather than the T20 format.

However, the plan did not last beyond the first innings.

After Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 219/6, conditions at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium appeared to prompt a reassessment by the team management.

With the surface expected to slow down and assist bowlers who rely on experience and control, SRH opted to lean on familiarity rather than experimentation.

Impact Player Rule Alters the Script

At the start of the second innings, Sunrisers Hyderabad used their Impact Player slot to bring Jaydev Unadkat back into the lineup.

The experienced 34-year-old pacer took over bowling duties, effectively replacing Praful Hinge before he had the chance to bowl, bat, or field.

This meant that despite being named in the Playing XI at the toss, Hinge never entered the field at any stage of the match.

Under official IPL regulations, a player’s debut is recognised only when they actively participate in the match — either by batting, bowling, or fielding.

Since Hinge did none of these, his debut was not officially recorded. The IPL website also reflected this technical outcome, confirming that his first appearance is yet to be recognised.

Impact Player Rule Highlights Tactical Flexibility

The incident highlights the growing tactical importance of the Impact Player rule in the IPL.

The rule allows teams to revise their strategy after assessing match conditions, effectively altering their original team combination midway through the contest.

In Hinge’s case, the rule overturned a pre-match decision and nullified what would have been a milestone moment in his career.

While tactically understandable, the situation created an unusual visual — a debut announcement at the toss that never materialised on the field.

Hinge’s Red-Ball Credentials vs Limited T20 Exposure

Praful Hinge has built his reputation primarily in longer formats of the game.

In the ongoing domestic season, he impressed in the Ranji Trophy, claiming 27 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 26.67 — performances that caught the attention of IPL scouts.

However, his experience in the shortest format remains limited.

Hinge has played just one match in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he returned figures of 1/23 in four overs while representing Vidarbha cricket team against Andhra Pradesh cricket team.

Sunrisers Hyderabad had acquired Hinge at his base price of ₹30 lakh, and given his limited T20 exposure, the team’s hesitation to field him in a high-scoring contest appeared tactically justified — even if the optics were unusual.

Result Adds to SRH’s Frustration

The decision ultimately did not produce the desired result for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Punjab Kings successfully chased down the daunting 220-run target, sealing victory by six wickets with seven balls to spare.

While SRH’s strategy reflected tactical caution, the match outcome — combined with Hinge’s non-debut — made for one of the most unusual moments of IPL 2026 so far.
