Rain Threat Looms Over RCB vs KKR Clash: IPL Resumption at Risk in Bengaluru

A 71% chance of rain at toss time raises fears of a washout as Royal Challengers Bengaluru host Kolkata Knight Riders in a crucial playoff-deciding encounter at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

May 17, 2025: The much-anticipated return of the IPL 2025 season after a break may be marred by rain, as the weather forecast for Bengaluru on Saturday looks increasingly grim. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are set to face off at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, but a heavy downpour may delay or even derail the fixture.

According to AccuWeather, the probability of rain peaks at 71% right around 7 PM, which is also the scheduled time for the toss. Earlier in the day, light to moderate showers are expected, with chances climbing steadily from 25% at 1 PM to 58% by 5 PM.

The ongoing spell of rainfall in Bengaluru and surrounding areas has already led to localised flooding, compounding fears of a wet evening for cricket fans. Despite the stadium’s advanced drainage system and top-tier grounds crew, there are concerns over how much play will be possible, if any.

RCB Eye Playoff Spot, Kohli Tribute Planned

RCB, with a win today, will officially seal their playoff berth, adding extra weight to this encounter. Fans have also planned a grand tribute for Virat Kohli’s Test retirement milestone, making the possibility of a washout all the more disheartening for home supporters.

KKR Already Victims of Washout

This isn’t KKR’s first run-in with inclement weather this season — their earlier match against Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens was abandoned due to rain after just one over.

While there is some hope — chances of rain dip to 49% by 9 PM and 34% later into the night — the forecast remains touch-and-go.

IPL fans, teams, and organizers will now be hoping the weather clears enough to allow a meaningful contest to unfold.
